Description

The books used in this course correspond approximately to what would be taught in a fifth grade gifted math program at a traditional school. This is the last math book series before commencing the rigorous Art of Problem Solving Prealgebra course in middle school.

We use the fun and rigorous Beast Academy books for elementary math. (The name comes from the storyline of the textbooks, in which material is presented through comics about a school for monsters.) This curriculum is produced by Art of Problem Solving, which typically offers a higher level of challenge and more in-depth presentation of the material than most American math courses. We think this is a good thing. However if the math coursework proves too challenging, we recommend delaying its introduction for up to six months, or progressing more slowly than the curriculum default.

Beast Academy is Art of Problem Solving's curriculum for grades one through five. Textbooks are in a comic / storybook format and episodes introduce concepts that are then practiced in the workbook.

Despite the playful presentation, Art of Problem Solving is a rigorous curriculum (often used to prepare for math competitions) whose approach focuses on understanding underlying concepts, rather than memorizing mechanics.

Our elementary math curriculum includes the Life of Fred series as an optional supplement. The Life of Fred is a fun math textbook series in which math concepts are presented in the framework of a humorous story about a character named Fred.

While some homeschoolers use this series as their only math curriculum, we feel that the elementary grade books do not provide enough practice to qualify as a rigorous stand-alone math program. However, The Life of Fred works wonderfully as a supplement that kids will enjoy reading to learn how math concepts are applied in everyday life.
