Description

Lego Spike is the successor to Lego Mindstorms. This is a robotics kit which consists of Lego pieces, motors and sensors that can be assembled into various kinds of robots and then programmed using a computer interface. Several programming languages are supported, including a Scratch-like drag and drop visual language as well as text-based languages like Python.

This is a great activity for middle-grade students who have a strong interest in programming or robotics. The downside is that the sets are quite expensive to purchase. However, you may be able to access this or a similar robotics set via your local library system or a robotics club.

There are many alternatives to Lego Spike on the market, some of which are simpler and more budget-friendly. We have not tested these alternative robotics kits, but you may find a review of several of them here: www.learnrobotics.org/blog/7-alternatives-to-lego-mindstorms-for-robotics.
