Description

This course should be commenced once the student completes the Introduction to Algebra (Algebra 1) course. It is a precursor to the Intermediate Algebra (Algebra 2) course.

Of the two high school geometry courses in our curriculum, this is the more challenging option, requiring both more time and a strong interest in math on the part of the student. The Art of Problem Solving textbook covers the material in far greater depth than a traditional high school course. It contains more exploration of advanced concepts, and less review, than a standard geometry course.

Start each new section by going over the example problems and their explanations. Next, have the student work through the problems at the end of the section in the textbook (there is no workbook).

Be aware that the textbook includes problems of a wide range of difficulty, and the majority of students (and parents!) are not expected to solve the most challenging ones without help. Use the solutions manual to work through any missed problems together. You may opt to skip the "Challenge" sections and complete only the regular problems if desired.

You may start this course in ninth or tenth grade, depending on when you complete the precursor Introduction to Algebra course. Take the time to work through it at the student's own pace. The book contains 112 sections and can be completed in eight or nine months at the rate of three sections per week.

For students who would like to go more in depth or prefer a live class format, Art of Problem Solving also offers challenging, instructor-led online classes at artofproblemsolving.com/school.
