Chinese 3
Description
Mandarin Chinese is a language of great practical importance, and learning it also opens a window into a rich and ancient culture.
Its reputation for difficulty deters many students, but the challenge lies mainly in mastering the writing system, and spoken Chinese is not very complicated. That said, learning Chinese requires substantially more time than most European languages. Students who persevere will be rewarded with the ability to forge connections with a culture that will be of major importance in the twenty-first century.
This course emphasizes two major skills: the ability to read using the simplified Chinese characters used in modern mainland China, and the ability to speak and understand spoken Chinese. (Writing is introduced, but not practiced as intensively as reading and conversation.)
This course should be taken after completing Chinese 2, and is worth one high school foreign language credit.
