About
This is an anthology that includes many of the major works of Western philosophy, either in complete form or representative excerpts.
Some of the readings (for example, most of Plato) are relatively engaging and approachable. Others (such Aristotle's Metaphysics, Kant) are notoriously difficult even for specialists.
Instead of reading this text cover to cover, we suggest choosing selections from the philosophers covered in the Looking At Philosophy spine text, as time and interest allow. Read the discussion in Looking At Philosophy first, then use this text to get a feel for the philosopher's original writing.
If you do not have time to study every selection, we recommend focusing on the following:
- All of the Plato readings
- Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics
- Descartes' Meditations on First Philosophy
- Kant's Critique of Pure Reason
- John Stuart Mill's Utilitarianism and On Liberty
- Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations
Earlier editions of this anthology are fine and can often be purchased used at a very affordable cost.
