Ida is a Palestinian-American eighth grader who is magically transported to her parents' village in Palestine, in a kind of alternate reality in which her family never emigrated. This plot device makes for a gripping adventure story that manages to convey the reality on the ground in contemporary Palestine and the dilemmas faced by immigrants, in a way that is is uplifting and will inspire readers to work for positive social change.
